Act Profile - Resume

Act Profile - Resume
Colin and Susan came together as a singing duo in the Spring of 2004 and became a couple in the romantic sense as well, getting married on 21st January 2006 at The Musical Village where they first met! Without doubt, Susan is an undiscovered talent. Her singing voice has been compared to Judith Durham, Nana Mouskouri and Linda Ronstadt. Their music has been described as ‘easy listening’ but they have also provided an up-tempo offering with one of Gippsland’s finest musicians; Terry Cupples (bass) who probably has no peer in Gippsland, and also Brenden Morris when Terry isn't available and Leigh Bechaz on guitar/mandolin. Their audiences have come from a wide variety of age groups, but are more suited to the over thirties age group.

Colin Parrish

Colin Parrish has been playing guitar and singing since age 14, learning to play Classical Guitar and drifting into the folk scene at University. He has a variety of playing styles embracing various styles of finger picking as well as straight forward rhythm guitar. In England Colin was part of a duo that performed at Johnny Dankworth’s “Stables” Folk venue in support to Steeleye Span in the 70s. He has played as a solo artist and as part of a group of musicians over the past 30 odd years.

Susan Parrish

Susan Parrish began playing flute at the age of 8 and now includes the penny whistle, the tenor & descant recorder, and guitar in her playing repertoire. She also has an amazing singing voice – described by many “ as soothing as honey” - and has played in several groups over many years. Her singing is quite unique. Rarely are listeners unmoved by the clarity and character of her voice. She works professionally at the Darnum Musical Village where she and husband Colin entertain the tour groups. Susan has delighted audiences everywhere across Gippsland & beyond with her modesty and easy going personality, not to mention an infectious smile!

What Makes Us Different?

“ I would say that what we do, has been well received largely because of the beautiful singing voice that Susan has, together with the blend of harmonies we have been able to create in our choice of songs. We like to stress that we are not a ‘rock n roll’ band. We play dinner/concert style music with a mix of well known up-tempo Irish songs and ballads.” Colin Parrish.

When you hear Susan singing you can’t help but take notice. It is not a classical voice; nor a screechy pop diva’s voice. It is quite unique. Calming; mellow, and “as smooth as honey”, as once described by a member of an audience. She has been compared to the likes of Judith Durham and Nana Mouskouri, but her voice bears its own distinctive quality. A lady in the audience at The Darnum Musical Village came up to her at the end of a performance and said; “I have been classically trained in South Africa, but you have the most beautiful voice that I have ever heard.” Singing is part of Susan’s life. She expresses her emotions through it. It is a gift that she was once told had to be shared with others.

Raising a family of four children made it difficult, until recently, for her to sing at venues that could showcase that gift. With husband Colin, she has become more settled in singing a style of music described as ‘easy listening’. But essentially, it is a style of music that audiences from across the spectrum find soothing; calming.

Feedback Received

Received February 7th 2011

Hello Susan and Colin, I'm a Missourian who has been searching for an inspirational version of"Shenandoah" to use at my memorial service (simply planning ahead for itwhile I still have my health), and I would be honored if you would grant mepermission to use your version posted at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ST1gz45ZKo Click here Your performance of this song is an impeccable, deeply-moving interpretationin a most tranquil setting. Susan's rich alto voice is aurally mesmerizing, and I am humbled by the beauty of your collaborative work of art, a giftfrom God that I didn't expect to receive today. If you have not already done so, please consider auditioning for"Australia's Got Talent" or another similar program so that the rest of theworld might have an opportunity to appreciate your talent as I have today. Thank you, most sincerely! Gene Gene WeberSt. Louis, MO, USA

"Your website reveals your compatibility and the wonderful service of good music you both offer to us all. I listen to your music, in a class by itself, with words I can hear and understand, and with a melody that is suitable and fitting for those of us who choose not to lead a frenetic life style fueled by cacophony, and indistinguishable and often rude and crude, lyrics." Helen Larsen, Santa Barbara, California.

"Dear Susan, Colin & Bob. Thank you for the beautiful entertainment you provided at our recent birthday party. We do not often have a group of your quality...Certainly we will endeavour to invite you again some time in the future." Kath Tanian, President Morwell Senior Citizens.

"Take some time to come and listen to this fabulous duo. Colin & Sue have delighted many people with their remarkable sound." Bonnie Medley, Proprietor of the Barn On Jacksons, Jindivick.

"Thankyou for your contribution to our reunion. The feedback was so positive about your music and choice of songs, and Sue, 'you are a star'! The people loved your voice and were still talking about you the next day." Max Cameron, Nilma

We have recently uploaded another video to go with the three that have been there for sometime. One of a live recording of the song about Lord Franklin, a moving story of Lady Franklin's lament while she waits to hear of news from her husband's ill-fated voyage to discover the North-West Passage. Another is the beautiful song Shenandoah. The third one is the Lindisfarne classic folk/rock song "Meet Me On The Corner." and we have - as at December 12th 2011 - uploaded our version of "The Rose" with an amazing photographic display from Echuca writer and photographer Paul Donohoe. Our Blog

August & The Old Drouin Butter Factory

August proved a busy month for us at the Darnum Musical Village, and with two appearances; one at The Barn On Jackson's in Jindivick, and our third concert at the Old Drouin Butter Factory on 28th. The night proved to be immensely successful, with a great audience, who were given a "By Request" set, where they got to choose 15 of the songs they wanted from a list of 40. With Terry Cupples on Bass, and Leigh Bechaz on acoustic & electric guitar, the crowd warmed to their choice of songs and we didn't finish till 10.40 pm, following a 7.30 pm start. Our sincere thanks to Margaret and Ken for allowing us the use of their wonderful venue, and to the audience, who were all very appreciative of our music.

New CD

From Both Sides

As at 21st September 2011 we have just completed recording our 4th CD, which will be called "From Both Sides" reflecting both Susan's and my backgrounds as we were both born on the other side of the world in the UK. Sue has spent all but ten years of her life here in Australia, and I have spent half of mine here too. This is our home. There are 17 songs on the CD and we are now about to send off for copyright authority before organising a 500 CD print sometime in October. This will allow us to launch the CD mid November at the Darnum Musical Village. Our particular thanks to Brenden Morris who provided some great Double Bass music to many of our songs, and to John Reid, on drums/percussion. John's touch has been a terrific asset on this and on previous recordings. Please let us know if you wish to recieve an invitation to the launch, as we are expecting a full house at the Village.
Some of the songs : Both Sides Now; Carolina In My Mind; Vincent; The Rose; Will you still Love Me Tomorrow and many others requested by so many of you who have heard us perform. A full list of songs will appear soon! The CD will be priced at just $15, as we have recorded and produced the CD in our own studio. The concert date is Sunday 20th November from 2pm. There is a $5 Venue Cover Charge, and there will be tea and coffee provided, with soft drinks for sale. BYO alcohol.
